More about the Great Taste Awards

In less than a decade, the Great Taste Awards has become the definitive standard for speciality food and drink in the UK. Most foods made in small batches, using authentic ingredients to traditional recipes may claim to be speciality, but the name rarely guarantees real quality.

Listening to the judges analyse, taste and discuss the relative merits of each food is fascinating - particularly when leading chefs take the trouble to explain in detail how easy it is to ruin good ingredients with overcomplicated preparation.

The Awards judging is scrupulously fair. Every entry starts with 35 points and judges deduct two points for a minor fault, five for a major fault. Before they are allowed to deduct points, however, they must describe the fault on their marking sheet. The Great Taste Awards is not simply about acknowledging the best, it also exist to help and encourage those producers who still have a little way to go.

Taste is very a personal experience, it would be unrealistic to presume every Gold in this year’s Awards offers universal appeal. However, what we can guarantee is that our judges believed each one to be as good as it gets.

The climax is the Awards Gala Presentation Dinner held in London in September. In 2005, celebrity chef Jean Shristophe Novelli announced the new Supreme Champion - the Sticky Toffee Pudding from Burtree House Farm. Jean Christophe declared during the judging that it was so good, he would be happy if it was part of his last meal on earth.
